40 | Forget About Goals, Focus on Systems in Your Jewelry Business with Robyn Clark

SPEAKER_00
So many of us are told that the best way to achieve success in our business is to set actionable goals. And I'm a huge fan of goals, but the reality is that your results do not have anything to do with your goals in your business. Your results are simply because of the systems and strategies that you implement and follow on a daily and weekly basis in your business.

So listen to that again. It is simply because of the systems and strategies that you implement, not because of the goals that you are setting. So you need to be really mindful of what you are doing on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in your business.

And are those tasks actually moving you towards where you're wanting to go or are they just fluff? Because there are a lot of fluffy tasks in business. Let me tell you. So in today's episode, I am helping you get really clear on your goals and then how to actually hit those.

What are the systems you need to be implementing and how to differentiate that and have a really, really good 2023. So grab your notebooks and let's dive in. Hello and welcome back to the jewelry business academy podcast. It is so good to be back here with you.

It's the new year to start of 2023 and what I love about the new years is it's such a great opportunity to reset in your life, reset in your business, to take a moment to look back on all the things that you did really well over the last year, all the celebrations that you had, all the wins that you had in your business. And it's also a time to stop and reflect and say, you know, what didn't I really love from the past year? What don't I want to repeat? What mistakes do I want to avoid making? What changes do I want to make? It's such a great opportunity to like actually stop and really reflect on the good and the bad in your life and in your business and then decide and be intentional in terms of the direction that you're going to go moving forward in your business. And I know some people feel overwhelmed in the new year when it comes to, you know, making resolutions or setting goals in your business.

And so I thought I would do a solo, so just talking about my approach to goals, setting in business and the way that I have developed a system that actually helps you hit your goals or move you really close to those goals over the year. And it becomes something that you don't forget about because that is a big one. I see so many people setting goals with very good intentions at the beginning of the year and then they forget about them pretty quickly.

And so that's what I thought I'd do a little solo, so today walk you through my process and it's the same process that I actually help my clients within the Jewelry Business Academy. It's the first thing that I do with my clients when they join the Jewelry Business Academy is we get ready, clear on their goals and then how they actually going to hit them. So to get started, let's just talk about goals.

Goals are what you are wanting to achieve in your life and in your business. And a lot of people actually haven't taken the time to get very, very clear on what it is that they are wanting from life. So the first thing that you want to do is get very clear on your why.

What is your purpose? What is your why for having your Jewelry Business? What is the reason that you're wanting to scale this business? What is it that you're wanting from life? A lot of the time people just say, oh, I just want to grow this business. I just want to make X amounts of money. But that is not enough to actually be that's not a strong enough driving force to actually go and make those sales and hit those goals.

So start by getting really clear on your why in your business. What is it that you're hoping your business is going to give to you over the next year? Do you want that time freedom? Do you want financial freedom? Is it for mental health reasons? Is it to give you a purpose, a reason to jump out of bed in the morning? Get clear on that. Why? And then start working backwards and be like, okay, well, from that, like, what are the goals that I'm wanting to achieve over the next year? How do I want to be feeling over the next year? How do I want to feel one year from today? And is there something that I would love to be celebrating one year from today in my life and in my business? Once you can get clear on where it is that you're wanting to go, then you can start deciding and working on how you're actually going to get there.

And this is what I see a lot of people doing is they'll set their goals. They'll say, okay, well, I want to hit $100,000 in sales in my business this year. I want to hire two employees and I want to work four hours a day.

And those are very unrealistic goals and they're very hard to actually go and hit if you don't have a plan in place, if you don't have timelines and systems in place to actually help you achieve those goals. But other way to sort of look at this is say you came to me and you said, I want to run a marathon in the next year. I want to run a marathon.

I've never run before, but that is my goal. I really want to run a marathon and complete that marathon in like a certain amount of time. Well, just having that as a goal doesn't mean anything.

It doesn't mean you're going to hit it. It doesn't mean you're going to get anywhere close to it unless you actually go and implement systems into your day to day life that are going to move you towards that goal. So if your goal was to run a marathon, well, then it means you need to start training every day.

You need to commit to whatever that level of training would be every day. You need to commit to eating the right foods every day, sleeping the right amount, cutting out drinking all of those things. And you develop these little daily habits which over weeks and months accumulate and the positive effect that they're going to have on your life and on you and your ability to actually run the marathon successfully is what's going to help you hit your goal.

So that's going to be the same in your business. When you are setting these goals, it is really important in my opinion to be clear on where it is you want to go because if you don't know, you're never going to get there. Even if you fall short, that's not the end of the world, but a lot of people protect themselves from the disappointment of not hitting goals by just not setting them.

And to me, that is just escaping those feelings of anxiety that we get when we feel like we're not good enough when we haven't reached that goal. When the reality is that you're worthy and you're good enough whether or not you get to those goals in your business and in your life. But having those goals is going to help you really keep your focus over the next year.

And so get clear on where you're wanting to go and then you're going to break that down and say, okay, well, if I'm wanting to make $100,000 in sales in my business, if I'm wanting to work less to hours in my business, or if I'm wanting to scale and not burn out over the next year, how am I going to do that? And get really clear on what are those actual steps that you're going to need to take every single day in your business in order to get your business to that place where you're driving that amount of sales. What systems do you need to implement? What strategies do you need to implement into your daily life? So when you take this approach to goal setting, instead of just writing out those goals and being like, that's my goals, I'm done, I'm going to work towards those and go without a plan. When you change your perspective and instead say, okay, well, those are my goals, but here's what I'm going to commit to doing every single day or three days a week or five days a week.

And I know that these three, five, 10 steps, whatever they are, generally it's like three to five steps maximum that are going to move you towards your goals. I know I'm going to do these every single day and I'm going to prioritize doing these first thing in the morning. So my first one to three hours every morning, I'm focusing on these revenue driving or whatever tasks they are that are going to move me towards my goal.

And over time, they're going to have a compounding positive effect. And that's really important to remember because here's the other thing that happens with goals and goal setting and new year's resolutions. And I'm sure a lot of people listening to this have experienced this at one point or another, but you set these goals and you start working towards them.

And after three weeks, you're kind of losing interest. You're losing motivation. And the reason is that it takes longer than three weeks to start seeing results very often, depending on what those goals are in your business.

So the key is to keep going. You don't always see results immediately and sometimes they have a slower rate at the very beginning depending on how well you're executing steps. For example, say your goal is to drive more online sales through social media.

So you implement a social media strategy and I do this with my clients in the jewelry business academy. We look at exactly what type of content they need to be posting, how frequently we have templates and everything for them so that it's really easy and they know what type of content to be sharing without feeling salesy. And they know, okay, I can batch this or I can show up once a day and just quickly create it and post and share it.

But the really important thing to keep in mind is that sometimes it takes a little while to warm up your audience or warm up your community, especially if you haven't implemented these strategies before or haven't been consistent with them. So you need to give yourself time and your business time to warm up a little bit to this new strategy to connect to your pieces, to connect to the content that you're sharing. And then you'll see a slow increment in results.

So it's going to have a compounding effect over time. As a result, you see after three weeks of implementing a strategy versus six weeks versus six months is going to be significantly different. So it's really important that once you've got these goals, you have implemented the strategies and the systems into your day to day life and your business.

Then you need to be consistent. Keep showing up. This is so crucial.

I talk to jewelry business owners from around the world every single week. I have spoken to business owners making multiple six figures, seven figures. And the one thing that all these really successful jewelry business owners have is that they keep showing up even through the challenging times, even when they're going through a difficult time in their business, even when the results are slower than they were anticipating.

They keep showing up consistency and just showing up and having that grit and perseverance is so important because nobody was handed a six figure business jewelry business and just was told, okay, run with this. Nobody, everyone's had to grow it from the ground up. So if you're listening to this and you're like, oh, I'm just starting out, like I don't even know that just sounds so wild to ever have a business that's making multiple six figures or seven figures, that's just not even relevant to me.

I want you to know that it is relevant to you. And there is nothing really differentiating the multiple six figure jewelry business owners and the business owners who are just kind of starting out. But the one thing that, that I see that is different is that the multiple six figure business owners have made it easy on themselves to scale their business.

They have implemented systems and habits into their day to day life and into their business that focus on the right things. They're very clear on where they wanting to go. They're very clear on how they are going to get there.

And when they are going through times of struggle, when they needing more perspective, when they have plateaued, they are willing to get support and they're willing to get outside eyes on their business. And I know this because I've worked with clients who are multiple six figures and the impact of having outside eyes on your business can be significant. And I've had clients within 60 days of working with me in the jewelry business academy, making multiple six figures, driving increase in sales of 30% in 60 days, making their highest second quarter in the history of over 14 years of business.

So it's really important to remember that. And I forgot where I was going with this now, but you know, the difference between these business owners is not necessarily that they're just better at business because I don't think that's the case. But what they are good at is they're very good at having clarity, very good at knowing where they're wanting to go and then making it really easy, building a life and habits in their daily life and habits and systems in their business that support them getting to those goals.

So that's actually a whole other podcast episode. I will be releasing that soon because there's there's a lot of different things that you can be doing on a daily basis and it is going to be different for every business. And that's what I teach in the jewelry business academy.

You know, I have the systems in there. I have the frameworks for business owners, but I also recognize that every single business owner is unique. Every single business owner has a different why they thrive under different environments in different ways of working.

And so I teach them how to adjust those frameworks to work best for them in their business because there is no one size fits all in business. So keep that in mind. But I would love for you to take some time now, get really clear on your why, break down your goals for the next year.

Keep it simple. Even if you just come up with three to five goals in your business and then break it down and be like, okay, well, what do I need to do on a daily, weekly, a monthly basis to actually hit those goals? Am I clear on that? Do I know what I need to do?
