73 | How People Around You Will Impact Your Jewelry Business Building Journey with Robyn Clark
SPEAKER_00 The communities around yourself with and the people that you interact with on a daily basis are going to have a significant impact on your business building journey. I'm diving into that today and how you can really nurture that community around you so that you have the most supportive community that will support you in life and in business. My name is Robin Clark and I'm obsessed with all things business and marketing.
I'm a jewelry designer who left the corporate world and grew a successful jewelry business and now I help women just like you from around the world do the same. I'm the founder and CEO of the Jory Business Academy, the host of the Jory Business Academy podcast and I'm here to help you scale your jewelry business to six figures and beyond without burning out. Through my coaching program and podcast I help you navigate the challenging seasons of business as well as teach you the secrets to building a sustainable business that makes you feel good.
So grab a cup of tea and your notebook, get cozy and let's dive in. Hello and welcome back to the podcast. I am really excited to be here with you today and as I'm recording this we are having another snowstorm and it's actually just so dreamy and so beautiful and it makes it nice and cozy in my little studio while I'm recording this for you and I have a really important topic that I want to cover in today's episode and you know some people may not resonate with this as much but I have seen the impact that your community and the people that you allow to be around you has on your business building journey.
The people that we surround ourselves with have a huge impact on how your business journey is going to look, how it's going to feel, how far you are going to go because the reality is that we take on the qualities of the people around us especially the people who are closest to us who we spend the most time with and I know everyone probably has you've probably heard that quote you know you become like the five people you spend the most time with and I think there's a lot of truth to that and so it's something you really want to be careful about especially if you know you don't necessarily have control over who you're spending that time with if you're still working in a corporate job you don't always have control over who the people are that you're spending the most time with but it is important to recognize that those people do have a powerful effect on our behavior they do have a powerful effect on the habits that we do on a daily basis they do have a powerful effect on the qualities that we take on as individuals as well and an easy way to think of this is you know when you're hanging out with a group of people who love going walking every single day and they go for walks and go for coffees to connect and chat to each other well you're automatically just going to be somebody who naturally is like going walking every day and connecting with them if you're your community or the people that you're spending the most time with like to just binge through social media or just watch trashy tv which hey I'm going to say there's a time and a place for trashy tv I'm not not saying never watch that stuff but you know people who are constantly just turning on the tv and just mindlessly scrolling through things it's just going to make it easier for you to to do the same type of thing and so you do really want to be aware of the people that you have around you what are the habits that they're doing on a daily basis and are those habits that you want to incorporate in your life what are the qualities of the people around you and in your community are those qualities that you want as an individual and as a business owner how are the people around you how did they respond when things don't go their way or when the inevitable challenges in business and life come their way because you know we're always going to be faced with challenges and what I remember from the corporate world was how reactive some of these men were in that company and just actually multiple companies that I worked in how reactive these men were how they would throw temper tantrums how they would lose it when things didn't go their way and it was incredibly toxic to be around in that kind of environment where you're constantly in fight or flight and it makes you feel like you're not really being shown healthy ways of dealing with things when they go wrong because there are always going to be going things going wrong in your business there are always going to be things going wrong in life and it's important that you have people around you that are there to support you through those chapters and be like okay let's get some perspective this is not the end of the world or maybe it is a huge huge challenge but being reactive is not going to help so you want to make sure that your your community or those people you're spending time with are people who know how to take a breath take a step back get perspective on whatever that challenge is and be like okay you know this is not ideal this is not a great situation to be in obviously we want to get out of this as quickly as possible but this is how we're going to do it this is what we'll do this is the path that we'll take because it doesn't benefit you or the people around you when you are reactive and so being around people who aren't reactive is really going to have a huge impact on your business building journey as well and just the type of business owner and entrepreneur you become so you know take a moment if you guys have your notebooks take a moment to journal about who are the people in your circle the five closest people in your circle and then the 20 closest people in your circle or maybe if you don't have 20 people that's fine if it's a smaller circle that's totally fine but what qualities do these people have that you want for yourself what habits do these people have that you want to incorporate in your life as well or that you admire how do these people respond to things that do go wrong in their life do they head to a bar and drink until you know they've kind of processed that like what is their mode of action when things don't go their way how do they respond what is their energetic static state are they nice people to be around do they make problems seem way bigger than they actually are you know are they looking after themselves during these challenging seasons are they modeling behavior that's going to support you when you go through challenges on your business building journey because let me tell you every single entrepreneur goes through challenges it's inevitable but everyone has different ways of dealing with those challenges and you know something I've done a lot on my entrepreneurial journey is I have built a community around myself not only within the Dory Business Academy where we have these jewelry business owners from around the world who are very grounded and very supportive of one another and when the challenges do come because they do come they're able to support each other and guide each other and give supportive advice and healthy advice to one another but I've also surrounded myself in my entrepreneurial journey with other coaches and other business owners doing the same thing as I'm doing who I admire who live their life in a way that I admire who build businesses in a way that I admire whose daily habits are things that I admire who deal with rejection or deal with challenges in a way that I admire and you know this actually kind of reminds me I remember I was you guys know I talk about this all the time I obviously have worked with quite a few coaches and I did get on a call once with a coach that I was considering working with long term because I thought she was really great and she is really really great but this call was four hours long and it was intense and she did not stand up she did not like take a break I couldn't get through the call I had to do yoga halfway through I went to dinner I was just like stretching and moving and I was like wow I'm feeling so guilty that I can't even sit through this call but it's just so long and it's so intense and then I realized afterwards like you know what that's okay that's somebody who maybe would support somebody else on their journey really really well but for me that doesn't work with my energy levels that doesn't that's not a value that I admire being able to sit and work straight for four hours it's not something I aspire to ever do it's not something I ever want to be doing you know not listening to my body and being able to move and stretch and all of that is not something I want to do either and so you know the people that I work with the coaches I work with are people who work in 90-minute increments they people who value having work and life integration that feels good they people who value listening to your body they people who value the foods that you're eating and the content you're consuming online and the way that you move about your day and the way that you nourish your body and the way that you nourish your mind and your soul and let me tell you it's incredibly powerful to be around people who are living their life and building businesses in a way that you admire and that you want to do too because some people because they've built their business in a certain way you know maybe they've done the hustle approach and it's worked for them they may think like that's what you need to be doing to be successful whereas other people who've built it in a more sustainable long-term way that doesn't require that constant hassle that allows space for breathing allows space for living allows space for play are going to have a different approach so you want to look at you know who other people you're surrounding yourself with and are they modeling the type of life that you're wanting to create for yourself not just the type of business that you're trying wanting to create for yourself and also look at the people around you and say do they ask for support when they need it and how do they ask for support or have you got a community of people who do not ask for support when they're needing help do not ask you for help when they're needing help like what is the dynamic there and what dynamic do you want because you know I want to be in a community and I am now in I have a really strong community around me where if I need help I get help very quickly that day I get that support and you know my clients are the same within the Jory Business Academy they know they have support within that program they have my eyes on their business every single week they have my support for not only the strategic challenges that come across come along in business but also the mindset challenges that come through and it's really interesting also to see how just having that community and having like mothers who have children in the same age and they're all building their Jory business or people in their time and building their Jory businesses together how having those little sub communities with in our Jory business academy community is so powerful in supporting them on their journey as well you know having people that really relate to what you're going through and have really great different approaches for doing that so don't underestimate the impact of surrounding yourself with a community of people who are on the same journey as you and are hoping to achieve the same sort of goals or same lifestyle or have already done that themselves it's incredibly powerful and you know I've seen that for myself I never want to be the smartest person in the room I never want to be the person who is like the one leading the way I always want to be in a room where other people have gone ahead of me where they are the ones leading the way because I want to be challenged to grow I want to be challenged to expand and just step into those next level versions of myself all the time so I'm really intentional with the friendships that I have the people I allow into my life the coaches I work with the family I spend time with you know I'm really intentional with all of that because it all has an impact on who you are who you become as an individual and how your business building journey feels and I see this as well unfortunately and hopefully nobody listening to this resonates because it is a challenge that I do see and some jewelry business owners unfortunately have partners who don't support their journey or family members who just don't see the potential in them they don't see how how much value they bring to the world through creating jewelry they don't see the potential in terms of building a really good work-life integration if they're in the early stages because it just seems so so challenging maybe at a season that they're going through and instead of building them up and giving them that support and giving them the the structure and the strategies they will break them down and it's really hard to see that happening to business owners and unfortunately that does happen quite a bit and I don't think it's intentional from these partners I think it's you know they looking out for their partner and they want them to be okay and they want to look after them so often it's coming from a place of love but it's just misdirected and it shuts down a lot of dreams before they've even had the potential to become a reality which is very very sad in my eyes because you know the last thing I want is to look back when I'm 80 and be like oh I wish I had done that you know I wish I had had the support or the people around me who really saw the potential in me and helped and encouraged me and bought out that best side of me that was able to take on that challenge of building that business and embrace it and just enjoy it and move through the challenges feeling supported so really take some time to think about who those people are in your community and I'm not saying cat people but it's just really important to be aware of who those people are how they're impacting your journey and maybe it's like okay you know these people are okay but I need to add a bit more support here's a little weak spot I need to make a conscious effort to bring those people into my life whether it's through other business besties who are going through the same thing as you whether it's through coaching whatever it is for you and it's going to be different for everybody listening to this but the impact of being around people and being in a community where every single day you see what they're doing in their business you see how they show up you see the energy that they show up with you you understand what their goals are and yours maybe are very in alignment and you see what they're doing and you see the wins they celebrating it makes your goals seem more realistic more achievable more doable and so much easier so you know and I see that in the Dory Business Academy actually every single week with the Dory business owners in the program share their wins with me when we chat on one of our group calls and it's incredible I've had so many messages from other business owners in the in the academy saying you know I was feeling like maybe my goals are too big or maybe it's just so unrealistic and then hearing this person who has kids who has all this going on who's new in the journey has been hitting those goals that to me felt so unrealistic just made me feel like wow this is possible and here's proof this is the universe giving me that proof that what I'm wanting to build and what I'm wanting to create and what I'm wanting to do is possible so there is so much power in that and I have that as well you know I surround myself with people who have huge huge goals and it makes my goals feel so doable so effortless so easy and it just it has a huge impact on my business building journey and I've seen it obviously with all these other Dory business owners as well the other thing that having this really strong community does is it really keeps your motivation levels up it keeps you it helps you be more resilient when challenges come through and just helps you keep taking those steps forward all the time no matter what little mountains are coming up on your journey it just keeps you going keeps you motivated keeps you excited and it's it's really powerful because you know maybe I'll share more of my story at some points but I know there's sometimes a chapter in business sometimes when you're laying those foundations which can be maybe six weeks for some business owners can be six months for some business owners where you're putting in the systems you're putting in the strategy you're implementing it but you're not seeing the momentum build just yet because it can vary for all businesses depending on a lot of different elements and that's generally the time frame when most business owners shut down and fail and so and that's usually just before the momentum really really picks up and a lot of business owners don't newer business owners at least don't seem to know that that's very normal to go through that chapter that's kind of your momentum building foundation phase where you're setting everything up so that you can build that momentum but it doesn't necessarily come overnight you know I'm I don't believe in overnight success I've seen businesses blow up overnight and then come crashing right back down a year or two later I'm all about building sustainable businesses that are going to be here in the long term and that feel good that make you feel good as an individual and that fulfill you at a soul level as well and and are profitable the massive massive thing that some people forget about as well so looking at your your community around you are there people that are helping you stay motivated it's the same reason we go to gym you know I have a yoga mat I have everything I need to do pilates at home every day or yoga every day do I do it every day I mean I can do 10 15 minutes a day but I'm never going to do that one hour classes that I do when I go to gym when I'm in a community and there's 30 other people doing yoga with me and we're in a room and we're all motivating each other you know it's very different having that community around you you push yourself a little bit further than you would which is always a good thing when you're wanting to grow and when you're wanting to expand and so that's something that you do want to consider as well so if you're feeling really excited and inspired after listening to this and you're like you know what I have a great community around me I have a really supportive partner I have family that supports me I have friends who support me but I'm ready for that next level of support I'm ready to embrace being held by a community of jewelry business owners who are all on the same journey as me who understand what I'm going through who understand the real ups and downs of what it takes to build a jewelry business and you're just ready to embrace that community and to embrace a season of growth and expansion then I'd love to invite you to join me in the jewelry business academy it's the most expansive container for jewelry business owners wanting to enter a season of growth and expansion who have very clear goals in terms of what they want their business to be hitting and how they want their life to be feeling but they're just not too sure of like the path to actually get there what systems do you need in place what strategies do you need in place what things do you need to maybe cut and change in your business in order to get there so that feels exciting if it feels expansive head to jewelry business academy dot ca to learn more and if you enjoyed this episode let me know screenshot the
